When she'd been woken up by a number of SSR lab techs (SHIELD, they call themselves, but they're all the same to her), Peggy hadn't been expecting to find that her entire life would be uprooted because Howard couldn't calibrate a damn experiment. Of course, all that disdain and grief had faded away when Steve Rogers had walked in, alive and well, and suddenly the future seemed brighter. Brighter, louder, and more confusing, too, but those are minor complaints.

Lucky for her, no matter what year she'd come from, she's still at least respected for her skills and with Romanoff helping her brush off some cobwebs, Peggy's managed to get some good training in. She's even got an agent's name, a lovely black spandex suit that's just awful, and right now, she's got a mission in hand.

It's a rather simple one, unfortunately. There's a man who has a very distinct preference when it comes to his women, who also happens to know some very important secrets that Fury would like Peggy to get out of him. It's a mission she's done ten times before and could probably do in her sleep. That's the main reason why she's annoyed that Steve is at her flat, watching her pick out something to wear for this mission.

It's as if he doesn't trust her to manage. Digging out a glittery gown, she wrinkles her nose, wishing for the days of classier outfits, but Peggy knows this is likely to draw attention to herself in a bad way, though it does make her nostalgic. "You know," she says, giving Steve a critical glance over her shoulder, "I have run this sort of mission enough times to do without the backup."

Or the fashion advice, but she presses her lips together to remain mum on this point. After all, she hasn't heard any yet and if Steve knows what's best for him, she won't.

No, he wasn't implying that she couldn't take care of herself, but it was Peggy's first mission and things had changed, which was all he was trying to get across. Steve had never underestimated her before and he wouldn't do it now. There was merely a need to... well, there was no need to bring that up now.

Shaking his head, Steve made it obvious that was not what he was doing. In fact, there was no further talking about it. All she needs to remember is that he will be there to make sure nothing went wrong.

Even with her in the bathroom, he looks away and into the main area of her apartment. It's only when she emerges again that he glances back.

"Yeah, that's what Natasha told me to do, too. Only she said it a lot nicer," he said, quirking a grin before straightening to stand. Oh, the irony in that. But his partner typically had a way of knowing what was on his mind and that didn't count as gossiping when she called him on it.

Even if Steve had been living in this modern world for a while now, his manners were still ridiculously proper and almost annoyingly so. When Peggy continues her dressing he gives her the respect she deserves and lowers his gaze as if in thought.

He doesn't answer right away, instead shrugs. Steve doesn't plan to lie. "Well," he teases lightly, glancing up.

Which was only saying she was a woman who took no guff.

"Alright, deal. Safe word is.. how about moonlight?"
